Happiness is...

...blogging from the couch on your spiffy new laptop with no wires anywhere.

Have I mentioned how much I love my new Dell Inspiron 700m? Its tiny and light, and it has the brightest most vivid LCD screen I've ever seen.

Its way cool.

On a side note, I upgraded to Moveable Type 3.1 today, since I'm really sick of being bombarded with comment spam. I deleted more than 600 posts selling everything from sex to Cialis.

I definitely like the new interface better. And it SHOULD help me keep from getting spammed to hell again.

Not Quite Breaking News

I know Xan was pissed about this so I thought it was worth a note...

The CBS News producer who made the call to break into CSI:NY with the news of Yasser Arafat's death has been fired. After complaints from several viewers, CBS issued an apology and took action.

Look, nobody wants to waste an hour of their evening getting hooked on a show, only to miss the critical last five minutes. Sure, its not the end of the world and if the news was truly shocking, unexpected and critical to know, people probably would have understood. But the guy had been on his death bed for two weeks (hell, he probably WAS dead for two weeks). So they couldn't have waited until after the show was over to tell us about it?

Actually, they had a perfectly good solution in place--run the news crawl at the bottom of the screen. But in typical media fashion, everyone wants to be the first one out with the scoop.

The moral of the story? Don't mess with our favorite TV shows!

That is, unless the world is about to end.

Guilty!

A California jury has found Scott Peterson guilty of first-degree murder with special circumstances. That means he's eligible for the death penalty.

Yeah, I know it will be years before he's actually executed, if it ever happens at all. More than likely, his fellow prison inmates will get to him first. But at least the guy isn't walking the streets.

Ha... I'll bet he thought he had gotten away with it.

Smug bastard.

An American Geekchik in London

My trip to Europe was amazing! I saw as much in a week as one could possibly see in that short period of time and I am exhausted, but it was well worth it.

The night I arrived, Heidi had arranged for us to go to the theatre to see One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest with Christian Slater. We had incredible seats (second row!) and the show was great--very entertaining.

We were on the go the entire next day, visiting Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and the Roman Baths. We drove by the Eton school and saw the very elite students all dressed in coat and tails (yes, they wear that every day), had lunch in a quaint English tea room and finished off with dinner at an old English pub. That was a lot to pack into a day, but no slowing down--the next morning, we took the Eurostar to Paris.

After checking in to our hotel room and taking a brief nap, we hit the streets of Paris. We found the Moulin Rouge, then off to the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower and finally shopping at the Champs d'Elyssee. I managed to find the perfect souvenier for Xan--a bright yellow Tour de France hat! After dinner at the oh-so-American Planet Hollywood, we went back to our hotel and crashed.

The next morning, we visited Notre Dame and did an express tour of The Louvre (Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo, and not much else) before catching our train back to London.

Saturday, we decided to catch up on a bit of rest, mostly just hanging around Heidi's flat. We managed to get off the couch in the evening and went to a showing of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (yes, a chick flick!) with some of Heidi's English friends. Funny, I didn't think the Brits liked the fact that an American was playing Bridget Jones, but the movie is quite a hit in London.

We were back at it Sunday, returning to Piccadilly Circus and central London so I could get pictures of Big Ben and Parliament. We did a tour of the Tower of London, which was amazing! From there, you could see the Tower Bridge up close and it is truly beautiful.

Monday was the long flight home. They were "trialing" a new x-ray machine for security at the Heathrow airport. Fortunately, I wasn't asked to participate. It seemed a bit intrusive.

I left with memories that will stay with me for a lifetime. The architecture in Europe is simply incredible. If I come across another deal like the last one in the future, Xan and I will definitely take advantage of it.

Will try to have my pictures posted in the next day or so...

Mind the gap!

Travel

I don't know why traveling is such a stressful event for me. I leave for London tonight and I'm completely freaking out. The fact that I'm traveling alone is probably a big part of it. Unfortunately, Xan couldn't join me for this trip.

I'm always worried that I've forgotten something, but I've got my camera and my passport. Aside from my clothes, I could live without everything else I brought.

The dogs are always so sad when I leave. Titus is very aware of what goes on around him and is very unhappy when you get out a suitcase. There's nothing more pathetic than a 90 lb. boxer lying on the bed pouting...

Off to Europe!
