FAQ

The fact that this is actually mentioned on Compaq's Frequently Asked Questions page should be a good indicator of just what kind of idiots I have to deal with on a day to day basis.

And I'll bet you thought this was just a Tech Support Urban Legend...

I must be cheap or something

Back when I was in junior high school, I remember wanting a particular pair of designer jeans that cost around $40. Then came high school, and Levi's were all the rage. At the time, those could be caught on sale for around $18. Then came Guess jeans, which pushed the $50 envelope.

I understand inflation and all that, but who in their right mind would pay $150 for a pair of jeans? I mean, those don't even look all that special to me.

These days, my jeans of choice are from The Gap. When I can catch them on sale, often I can find them under $30. Full price, in the worst case, is $48. And I don't remember the last time I paid full price for them.

Now, if they made my butt look REALLY small, THEN I might consider buying $150 jeans...

Trouble in Paradise

Rumor has it that Nick and Jessica's happy little marriage has hit a bump in the road.

I don't know how Nick has managed to tolerate Jessica's overwhelming ignorance for as long as he has, quite frankly. The whole concept of arm candy has got to get old when you can't even have an intelligent conversation with somebody. But as far as his career goes, I think he'd be wise to get these visions of a successful solo singing career out of his head. The boy band thing can only take you so far.

The best thing Nick Lachey could do would be to get into acting. Then again, if he was any good at it, you'd think a decent role would have popped up by now.

As for Jessica, well... maybe she should take up modeling. All the men seem to think she's incredibly hot, so sticking to something where she doesn't need to open her mouth would be a smart move. Apparently she's going to be playing the role of Daisy Duke in the upcoming "Dukes of Hazzard" movie. Probably a suitable role, no doubt, but will she even be able to remember her lines? Time will tell.

I just hope they've both invested their money well.

Welching on a bet

Don't ever enter into a bet with Tom Arnold. If he loses, he won't hold up his end of the deal.

It seems that Tom was in town for the ASU/Iowa game last Saturday and did a live taping of "The Best Damn Sports Show Period" from McDuffy's, a local sports bar in Tempe. During the taping, Coach Dirk Koetter gave him an ASU helmet, which Tom Arnold agreed to display on the show for the rest of the year if ASU won the game.

Apparently, Tom Arnold didn't think his team would get CRUSHED by ASU. But when they did, he obviously decided he didn't have to keep up his end of the deal. Instead, he destroyed the helmet.

Too bad Tom's big fat head wasn't in it at the time.

Hey, Tom... sorry ASU knocked your team out of the NCAA top 25! It must suck to be a Hawkeye fan right now.

Can you say... ROUT??

May the Force be with you!

Well, today is the day I've been waiting for--the original Star Wars trilogy finally came out on DVD!

Unfortunately for me, I pre-ordered mine on Amazon. I just couldn't take the chance that their $41.99 price (with free shipping) was for pre-orders only. I fully expected them to raise the price closer to the $70 MSRP upon release.

They didn't.

And while mine shipped today, I still have to wait for it to get here, which could take as much as a week. I find myself wondering if I should just go and buy it, then return the Amazon copy to the store once I receive it.

That would be a really geeky thing to do, wouldn't it?

Well, not as geeky as standing in line dressed in full Jedi attire at the stores who began selling it at midnight. But close.

I just can't help it. As much as I loved the original movies, I'm dying to see just this itty bitty change at the end of Episode VI, where the old image of Anakin has been replaced with that of Hayden Christensen. I didn't like some of the tinkering Lucas did before the re-release (the scene with Jabba the Hut talking to Han Solo at Mos Eisley in Episode IV just didn't work for me), but I'm not one of the purists who refuse to buy the DVD's because they deviate from the originals.

After all, this is how George really wanted them to look.

But back to my dilemma. With the hubby out of town for a couple of nights, this is the perfect time to turn off all the lights and regress back into Star Wars nerd-dom in the comfort of my own living room. So what to do?

Maybe I'll just pop in Episodes I and II to build the anticipation. That's what I get for trying to save a few bucks.

I'm so bummed

We were in the mood for a Philly cheesesteak sandwich today, so we hopped in the car and drove over to our favorite little sandwich place, Max's Taste of Philly. Much to our dismay, they were closed. A sign was taped to the front door, so I jumped out to read it:

"Notice of Lien..."

Its a sad day. We have been going to Max's for years, back when they were in a dumpy little shack on East University. Back then, the place was always packed. They were open for breakfast and lunch, and that was enough. On the weekends, it was hard to find a free table. It was a favorite in the neighborhood.

Then one day, the building owner decided to sell the old shack. Max's moved into a vacant restaurant over by Fiesta Mall. Its a busy area, so one would have thought they'd do well there. But because of agreements with the fast food restaurants already in the shopping center, Max's couldn't serve hamburgers anymore. And no more breakfast.

Since the new place wasn't visible from the street, it was all too easy to miss if you didn't know they were there. In time, the shopping center started to decline, losing even popular restaurants like Red Robin and Bennigan's.

Sadly, I guess it all became too much for the owners to hang on to. The rent near the mall was undoubtedly more expensive than the old shack on University. And as newer, bigger and fancier malls have been built in the area, Fiesta Mall doesn't draw the kinds of crowds that they used to. It was far enough from their old stomping grounds that many of their old customers didn't frequent Max's anymore.

Its such a shame. It was the kind of place you would go to and feel like you were one of the family. The owner knew exactly what I ordered every time without asking. It was that kind of personal touch that made the place what it was, aside from the killer cheesesteaks.

Max's, we will miss you.

School's out!

Last night was the final class for the certification program I've been working on. Let me tell you, working for 8 hours a day and then going directly to school for 4 hours 3 nights a week is absolute hell.

I'm far too old to ever do that again. Fortunately, its all over.

Now I just have to tackle 10 certification exams and I'm home free...

Curse of the Child Actors

Looks like trouble for another former child actor (or in this case, actress). Tracey Gold was arrested and charged with DUI after a recent accident in her SUV, nearly killing her husband and two of her kids in the process.

Back in the day, Tracey Gold was one of the earliest celebrities to come forward and admit she was battling with anorexia. Let's hope she hasn't replaced her eating disorder with a drinking disorder.

Why is it that child stars have such a difficult time dealing with adulthood?

What's the point?

Here's an invention I think we all could have lived without.

I know LG is working on the "internet ready" fridge, and maybe this is just a step in that direction. But their philosphy behind this product is that dinner is the only meal a family spends together. Maybe they figure that putting a TV in the room will make the kids more happy about having to eat with mom and dad.

My thought is, how much QUALITY is in this time you're spending together when the kids can't pry their eyes off the TV long enough to chat about their day?

Call me crazy. I think this is a stupid idea.

Karma

The owner of these seven puppies in Pensacola, Florida definitely got what was coming to him.

Actually, its too bad the bullet didn't hit him in the head.

Why someone would opt to shoot an animal rather than drop it off at the local Humane Society is beyond me. Its a shame this idiot shot three of the puppies before taking a bullet in the wrist, but at least one of them avenged his siblings' unnecessary deaths.

Irresponsible pet owners piss me off...

El Nino Anyone?

They're saying that all signs point to El Nino this winter, which could mean above average rainfall and snowfall for us in Arizona this winter.

I hope that they're right. While I personally had more than enough rain to last me a lifetime while living in Washington many years ago, we definitely need some moisture here in Arizona. We had very little rain during the monsoon season this year, and our lake levels are dropping again.

The ski resorts are already buzzing about having a banner season this winter.

I remain guardedly optimistic.

The RIAA's New Hell

Canadian developer Scott MacLean has created what is sure to be the next target of the RIAA. Its called TimeTrax.

In a nutshell, it allows you to record digital quality MP3 files from your XM Satellite Radio.

In the past, the RIAA never cared about songs being recorded from analog radio because of the obvious loss of quality. As digital radio becomes more and more popular, they're starting to get worried. They approached the FCC in June in an effort to stop the potential for the selective recording of music from digital radio stations.

They must have seen it coming.

The developer of the software has already been issued a "cease and desist" order from XM Satellite Radio, who no doubt does not want to become the next legal target of the RIAA.

It should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Again with the 'Girlie Men'

Once again, Arnold Schwarzenegger makes constant movie references in his speech, referring to those who are skeptical of our economic growth as "economic girlie men".

Come on, Arnie, give us a break. You've got to learn to separate the "Hollywood Arnold" from "Governor Schwarzenegger".

It was a little funny the first time around, but now its almost embarrassing.
