My husband is gonna be heartbroken...

Xan's favorite little spot is going away...

Now where are we gonna go for chicken wings?

Relentless Pursuit

The detectives handling this case would not give up, and nearly 30 years later they got their man.

Who would have thought that eating at a fast food restaurant could lead to the capture of a murderer?

Let this be a lesson to you criminals out there. Eventually, you will slip up!

Ultimate Wimp

Either Richard Simmons has a death wish, or this is one wimpy ultimate cage fighter.

How can this guy ever get into the ring again knowing that he was bitch slapped by a 120 lb. 55-year-old male aerobics instructor?

I smell a civil suit.

Snake on the Beach

Jake, Jake, Jake... you know I love ya, man. I was one of the few who stuck up for you when all the other fans were booing you. I knew it wasn't YOUR fault that the Cardinals were always losing. I even backed you up when the whole Club Rio incident was giving you bad press. I always figured you were a stand-up guy.

Perhaps I was wrong about that part.

Quite frankly, I can't say I'm completely surprised. I've SEEN Jake's girlfriend and she's not your stereotypical athlete's arm candy. In fact, when I saw them together, I was sure they were just friends. He didn't exactly seem to be excited about showing her off.

Jake's a good looking guy and if he wasn't already rich after being with the Cardinals, the Broncos made him FILTHY rich. So naturally, a guy like that is gonna have thoughts racing through his head figuring he can do better.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a pig now. But it doesn't surprise me much coming from a professional athlete.

Glad my hubby didn't leave me standing on that beach in Maui.

So THAT'S why they call it a strike

I know we all have unused sports equipment lying around the house, but I'm not so sure this is the best way to make use of them.

At least he's creative.

Here we go again...

Record heat. Seems to me I've heard this before.

We were breaking records last "fall" when we had our latest ever 100+ degree day last October 23 (the 20th was the previous record). Then temperatures dropped to the high 60's virtually overnight.

Now we're getting screwed out of our normal low 80's of spring.

Ah well... I suppose something good will come out of this. The snowbirds won't be able to tolerate this for much longer and will head back to their summer homes. Which means my drive time in the morning will be cut by 10-15 minutes, easy.

I guess its time to fire up the ol' WaveBlaster...

Happy Anniversary!

Today is the third anniversary of our wedding day. Its hard to believe it has been three years! I guess its true that time flies when you're having fun.

Thank you, Xan, for everything you do. It has been a wonderful three years and I'm looking forward to many more. Happy Anniversary--I love you!

Sabino Canyon Mountain Lions

I was happy to read that Arizona Game & Fish has decided to remove the mountain lions that have threatened hikers at Sabino Canyon, rather than execute them.

When I read yesterday that they had decided there was no other option than to shoot them, I was very disappointed. I couldn't understand why tranquilizer guns couldn't be used instead. The public outcry must have finally been enough to make Game & Fish reconsider. Today they have announced that their position has changed.

Although I'm a huge animal lover, I'm not completely opposed to hunting when the reasons are appropriate. I think Arizona Game & Fish does a great job controlling overpopulation of animals. If not for their efforts, many of these animals would undoubtedly starve and suffer. However, in this case, it just seemed like such a poor reason to kill these animals.

We continue to build further and further out in the desert and are driving these animals out of their habitat. Its only natural that they're going to find other places to go. Unfortunately, in this case, it happened to be a popular hiking spot. It just didn't seem right to kill these poor animals simply so we could continue to use the area for recreation. I agree that something had to be done if they were endangering human life, but I couldn't believe that shooting them was the only option.

Its unfortunate that they don't feel there is another area they can be relocated to, but at least they won't be killed. I hope they will do well in their new environment.

Hot Damn!

Someone is finally getting the idea--hotspots for FREE is a great marketing concept.

It seems that AMD is partnering with companies to offer free hotspots to their customers. This is essentially intended to compete with the Intel Centrino campaign--the difference being that the Intel sponsored wi-fi spots are charging a fee.

Now, I already have internet access at home and at work. And although I'd love the convenience of pulling out a wireless PDA (someday) and using the internet while I'm having lunch, I'm certainly not willing to pay for it. Well, maybe I'd pay a LITTLE. But the T-Mobile Hotspots found at Starbucks, Borders, etc. are not cheap. Plans range from $6.00 for an hour to $29.95 per month.

I suppose I wouldn't gripe about paying $29.95 a month for unlimited use if I could get to it ANYWHERE (including my home). But if I gotta drive to the nearest Starbucks to check my e-mail--that's not quite working for me.

Hopefully, businesses will realize that free wi-fi access will bring in customers. I personally would go a little out of my way to eat at a restaurant that offered it.

Then again, I'm a pretty big geek.

Updates

Here's a couple of updates on previous entries.
___

The jury votes big-time in favor of the popcorn factory workers.

Look out, popcorn guy. I'm coming after you...
___

The Walmart shopper who tried to pass off the $1,000,000 dollar bill as the real McCoy blames the US Treasury. It seems that ignorance is bliss--she thought they were real.

Hoochie--do you really expect us to believe you REALLY thought your estranged husband had given you $3,000,000? In cash? And you were still shopping at Walmart??!?

Someone call Jeff Foxworthy. I've got one for his "You might be a redneck" routine.

Geek Justice

Pedophiles beware--that little girl you're talking to might be one of the members of Perverted Justice.

Lawlessness be damned, I applaud these guys. Its not like they're going out and hunting these guys down and killing them (although anyone who would pick up children on the internet deserves outright torture). They're merely making it known who these people are. And if it possibly saved one little kid from being molested (and/or worse, murdered), then I'm all for it.

Heads up to JR and Leigh--first thing I saw when I went to that sight was a response from a guy in Gilbert, AZ! Boo hoo. I feel bad for the guy... NOT. Maybe he shoulda thought about the mental abuse he could have been causing to the little kid he THOUGHT he was talking to.

I think I'll go check out that sight and make sure I don't see anyone I know...

Hannibal Lives

Here's a disturbing little story about Robert William Pickton and his pig farm.

It sounds like it could have been the next chapter in the Hannibal Lechter saga.

I might have to swear off pork for a while...

Hazardous Work Conditions

That settles it. I'm going to start carrying around little disposable paper hats to put over keyboards and mice before I work on someone's computer.

I don't think Clorox wipes and hand sanitizer are enough anymore...

Especially when you have stuff like this going on:

So like, if I get hepatitis from a nasty keyboard, can I file a Workers' Comp claim for that?

Death by Popcorn

You know who I mean. Its the guy in the office who can't figure out the popcorn button on the microwave. The one who sticks a bag of popcorn in the ol' breakroom microwave and walks away, only to have it burned beyond consumption. Pretty soon, the smell permeates the office. The stench of burnt popcorn becomes overwhelming. You find yourself choking and have to run for the door to get some air.

Wish you could punch him? Well, now you might have a good reason. Seems the popcorn guy might be endangering your life.

I just hate it when people pop the stuff at work. When it gets burned, I can't breathe. When it's popped right, the smell makes me hungry.

Maybe I'll forward this article on to the Human Resources Department.

Or better yet, OSHA...

Geek Romance

I'm kind of sentimental, and usually I get all choked up when I hear stories about marriage proposals and things of this nature. Somehow, this one isn't having that teary-eyed effect on me.

Maybe its just because I work on computers for a living, but I just don't find anything the least bit romantic about a PC. But hey, the girl was happy. She got a ring AND a new computer. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I'm just glad my hubby isn't as much a geek as I am...

Oh those Walmart Shoppers

Here's one for the Master Criminal File...

Actually, I'm a little surprised that Walmart employee caught this.

I'm not sure what part of this is more ridiculous--the fact that this woman actually thought someone would be stupid enough to believe she had a $1,000,000 bill, or the fact that someone could buy $1,600 of crap at Walmart...

Microdrive at half the price

I'm not sure WHAT I ate on Saturday but for the past two days, I've felt as though an alien lifeform was about to emerge from my stomach.

Anyway, while lying in bed yesterday, in between visits to pay homage to the porcelain god, I was trying desperately to find entertainment in the drek that is weekday television. Unable to find anything mentally stimulating in the mish-mash of soap operas, talk shows (seriously, how many times can you bring these women back to find out if THIS one is her baby's daddy?) and Judge Judy/Joe Brown/Mills Lane/Mathis et al, I stumbled upon something useful.

The Screen Savers on TechTV was doing a little segment on "dark deals". They were showing how to do a little hack-job on a 4GB Creative Labs Muvo MP3 player. Turns out the Muvo uses a 4GB Microdrive for memory. The beauty of this little tip is that a 4GB Microdrive sells for $400-$500 (and up), but the cost for the Muvo is about $200.

Obviously, all warranties become null and void. But if you want a 4GB Microdrive for barely $50 more than a 1GB model, here's your answer.

At least I learned something during my bout with food poisoning...

Money for Nothin'

This is how Bill Gates is going to eliminate spam?

In case you didn't catch the buzz back in January, Bill Gates claimed he would eliminate spam by 2006. He said that Microsoft was working on a way to proof or fingerprint e-mails, which would enable people to confirm the identity of the sender.

Apparently Bill realized his claims were a bit brazen. Perhaps development wasn't going as smoothly as he thought and he figured he'd better cover his tracks. Now he's proposing that we pay postage on e-mail as a way to reduce the amount of spam we receive.

I don't know about you, but my snail mail is chock full of junk. On average, I throw away 75-80% of what comes in my mailbox. Obviously, the cost of postage isn't deterring people from sending me unsolicited crap, as Bill suggests it would. In fact, the junk mail senders get a discounted rate--its called Bulk Mail.

This is just another way for someone (Microsoft? The Federal Government?) to squeeze more of my hard earned dollars from me. I already pay $45 a month for my broadband internet connection. I pay another company for hosting this site. So why on earth should I pay postage on e-mails that I send out?

Aside from costing me more money, I see other problems with this solution. First, who would mandate the cost of the postage? If its the USPS, I imagine we could expect regular increases. Second, how would we be billed for such a service? It would cost an ISP more money to prepare an itemized, detailed invoice than it does to send a standard once-a-month bill. Since there is now a profit to be made by use of their software, naturally Microsoft would want a piece of the pie and would charge some sort of licensing fee for Outlook Express.

There are a lot of voluntary newsletters that I enjoy reading. And I have taken advantage of some great deals from legitimate stores who have sent me special offers via e-mail (I got a great set of knives from cooking.com for $14.99). No doubt these companies would stop sending me things I have willingly signed up for if they were to incur a cost for it.

As far as the unsolicited garbage goes, I use a great little program called MailWasher. It does an excellent job filtering out my e-mail and gives me a simple interface to delete random spam before downloading my mail to my Inbox.

Come on, Bill. I know that a few cents to send an e-mail means nothing to someone like you who has more money than you know what to do with, but it all adds up for the average worker like me.

Just like the increased gas prices (here I go again...).

McBummer

Now what am I going to do when PMS strikes and I'm jonesing for a pig-sized order of McDonald's french fries?

I can tell you whose to blame for this. Its all the fat people who blame fast food restaurants for their problems. Its the lawsuit-happy who refuse to accept blame for their own actions.

Who ever said fast food was supposed to be healthy?
