...an office with 200+ employees and three IT people being hit with a virus that has not yet been identified.
It took Symantec a full two days to release definition files to catch the virus that hit our office. The first day, we spent the entire time trying to figure out what the heck we had. The second day we spent trying to identify the virus file (or as it turns out files) and then cleaning them off manually, only to have them become reinfected minutes later. Having no definition files makes virus software worthless. Throw a hardware failure from your ISP in there and now you're trying to fix this mess using a dial-up connection to the internet to do research. When it rains, it pours.
Day 3--after working 16+ hours on day 2, we finally got our definition files, only to discover that the virus has morphed. This time, however, Symantec released the definition files in time to catch most of it.
Day 4--things are finally under control. And I'm beat up.
Sorry I haven't posted for a few days, folks. I've been a bit preoccupied.
If I ever get my hands on the little bastard who wrote that virus... well, it won't be pretty.
Posted by geekchik at April 5, 2004 08:49 PMWe've been hit hard too, but our SPAM software catches much of that virus stuff before it gets to the clients even if the virus defs are not up to date. Luck I guess....
