I'm not sure WHAT I ate on Saturday but for the past two days, I've felt as though an alien lifeform was about to emerge from my stomach.
Anyway, while lying in bed yesterday, in between visits to pay homage to the porcelain god, I was trying desperately to find entertainment in the drek that is weekday television. Unable to find anything mentally stimulating in the mish-mash of soap operas, talk shows (seriously, how many times can you bring these women back to find out if THIS one is her baby's daddy?) and Judge Judy/Joe Brown/Mills Lane/Mathis et al, I stumbled upon something useful.
The Screen Savers on TechTV was doing a little segment on "dark deals". They were showing how to do a little hack-job on a 4GB Creative Labs Muvo MP3 player. Turns out the Muvo uses a 4GB Microdrive for memory. The beauty of this little tip is that a 4GB Microdrive sells for $400-$500 (and up), but the cost for the Muvo is about $200.
Obviously, all warranties become null and void. But if you want a 4GB Microdrive for barely $50 more than a 1GB model, here's your answer.
At least I learned something during my bout with food poisoning...
Posted by geekchik at March 9, 2004 11:40 AMFrom what I've read, Creative has changed the way the drives are included in the MP3 players (I'm sure Hitachi didn't push them at all). Newer Muvo's have the drive attached in a different way.
Now, if you can find a mini iPod, you can do the same thing, you'll just have to reformat the drive in windows, but you'll be left with a working Microdrive, at least until Apple decides to change their model too...
Posted by: James at March 9, 2004 09:27 PMThats why Amazon has them "backordered". All these guys are buying a Muvo, they'll open it up and find out you can't do what everyone said they can. Bet you that they can't get the MP3 player back together again. How many returns you think Amazon will have to deal with?
